Philosophy in My Classroom

Over the years I have learned a tremendous amount about many different types of Learning disabilities, Autism included. I have taught many types of children with a variety of needs.I have learned that all children with special need a regular, predictable structured environment to succeed in the classroom. It is my goal as their teacher to give them a successful education.

My classroom is highly structured. It is dedicated to supporting the students’ success. I use the ABA method- TEACCH.My focus in the classroom is reading, since I am a Wilson Reading Specialist. The Wilson Program incorporates the development of language and communication skills. This is why I feel that this program is so successful with these students. Of course, when you have students with special needs you need to also focus on Social skills and self-help skills.

I have areas of my classroom organized for different activities. There is an area designated for group work, independent work, play and individual teaching. There is a chart with Words and Picture cues to show the child visually what work is to be done that day and in what order. This brings about routine and independence for the child.

I believe it is important to keep a structured environment, a warm, positive, friendly atmosphere the children feel safe in.

If my students are not grasping the concept, or skill I’m teaching I ask myself, “How else can I approach this in order for them to understand and master this skill?”

I believe in a child centered classroom with an understanding that a thorough assessment of each individual’s ability, together with specific teaching methods are crucial to a child’s success.
